In 1961, CIA operative Alex Mason is captured during the Bay of Pigs invasion and sent to a Soviet labor camp. There, he is brainwashed by Russian villains to become a sleeper agent, but fellow prisoner Viktor Reznov covertly reprograms him to kill the Soviet conspirators instead.Years later, Mason is strapped to an interrogation chair by his own agency, frantically reliving his past missions to decode a broadcast station's location. In a climactic twist, Mason discovers that Reznov died during their prison break and has been a mental hallucination guiding his actions all along. Armed with the truth, Mason breaks free, destroys the broadcast ship, and kills the Soviet leader just before a catastrophic chemical attack is launched against America.
