Edwin Murray is an exceptionally talented engineer and inventor who becomes responsible for creating the technology that would eventually become the Mimic. Edwin originally creates the Mimic as an adaptive machine capable of observing and copying human behaviour. Its purpose is simple: to learn from the people around it and replicate their actions. Edwin's greatest motivation, however, is his son David, who becomes the centre of his life following the collapse of his marriage. The Mimic is eventually used to entertain David, learning his mannerisms and playing alongside him. For a time, Edwin sees the machine as a way of bringing happiness into his son's life while he struggles to balance his work and his responsibilities as a father. David's death completely changes Edwin. Consumed by grief and anger, Edwin lashes out at the Mimic, unknowingly teaching it something far more dangerous than simple imitation: violence. The Mimic begins copying Edwin's behaviour, preserving the aggression and trauma it witnessed. What Edwin created to imitate harmless human actions has now learned that violence is another behaviour worth reproducing. This would all come to ahead when the Mimic kills Edwin in his office.
