He was a world-class talent at Olympique Lyonnais but repeatedly refused to represent the Algerian national team in hopes of winning France's favor; He played one match for the French national team before being dropped, when France rejected him, his form dipped and his market value plummeted. He later played for Algeria and delivered some solid performances but failed to win over the Algerian public. As his form declined further at AS Roma and Al-Ittihad, the sporting community turned against him, opposing his inclusion in the national squad. Nevertheless, he was called up for the 2026 World Cup; while he performed well against Austria, he produced an absolute footballing disaster against Switzerland, leading to his exclusion from the team.
