Fictional character

Lunaère

Created by Haroosh

Lunaère is an ancient lich and former human magical prodigy who was born into a family of renowned mages roughly a thousand years before the story. After losing her father and watching her mother succumb to grief, she secretly mastered forbidden resurrection magic before abandoning it when her mother began recovering. Years later, she was mortally wounded while defeating a Demon King and used the creature's still-beating heart to resurrect herself as a lich, sacrificing her humanity in the process. Rejected and eventually subjected to horrific experimentation because of her undead nature, she withdrew into the depths of Cocytus, where centuries of isolation transformed her into a reserved, blunt and emotionally repressed researcher. Despite claiming to hate humans, she retains extraordinary compassion and becomes Kanata's mentor after discovering him at the bottom of the dungeon. Through training him in magic, combat and survival, she gradually becomes emotionally attached to him, forcing her to confront the loneliness and humanity she had spent centuries suppressing. Her later efforts to overcome her unholy aura, travel through the human world and monitor Kanata reveal that the supposedly detached lich has, in fact, begun wanting something very simple: companionship and a place where she can belong. By the final volume, Lunaère's ancient trauma and immense magical power are brought directly into the conflict with the gods, but her defining characteristic remains the same—despite becoming immortal, undead and extraordinarily powerful, she never lost the capacity to care.
