In a near-future megacity, people can externalize fragments of their psyche—called “Eidolons”—into semi-physical entities that act as companions, tools, or weapons. The technology is marketed as therapeutic, but it quietly erodes the boundary between identity and projection. The story follows a systems engineer who discovers that some Eidolons are evolving independently, developing motives separate from their hosts. As unexplained “desynchronization” incidents increase, society begins to fracture: some people side with their Eidolons, others seek to suppress them.
